One thing one cannot choose in life is your neighbors. Even if you do not like them very much, it would be best if you manage to have a good relationship with them. There are times when you might need them, and in a hurry, such in cases of a house fire or other emergency, or if you’re going out and you are expecting a parcel delivery, or if you want someone to feed your cat/dog when you are going away for the weekend. Also be prepared to return the favor.
It is a sad fact of life that sometimes you do not even know who the people living right next to you are. It is a good idea to start being friendly with your neighbor, wave and say hello next time you see them. Ask them how they are. But remain respectful. Try to avoid waking them up with loud parties and barking dogs. If you are going to have a party, be courteous and let them know before the time. Do not invite them over unless you are friends.
Good neighbors look out for one another’s safety. They inform one another of unwanted or unknown people out in the street. Take note of their habits so that you know what would be an unusual time for them to rise or leave. They would do the same for you.

Keep your pets out of your neighbor’s yard, house or flat. Your pet is your responsibility. They may not want pets due to certain considerations, so keep your pet where it belongs, at home.
Keep out of their personal differences. In other words, mind your own business. You would want them to pay you the same respect.
Watch how your trees or garden grow. Even if a tree or some plant is in your yard, your neighbor might think it is intruding on their property.
Keep your pool safe, locked or covered. It is your legal obligation to keep children of the neighborhood safe, even if they climb over the fence to catch a quick illegal dip in your pool. The pool remains your responsibility.
So next time the postman comes round with a parcel delivery for your neighbor and they’re not there, go ahead and sign for it. You might just start up a fruitful relationship.
