Whenever we send something in the mail that requires more protection that regular mailing envelopes provide, we should opt to use padded envelopes. Items such as photographs, DVDs, books and garments can be shipped using envelopes that are designed to provide some cushioning to the contents.

Padded envelopes do not provide enough protection for breakable items such as glass and porcelain. These are more appropriately packed in boxes. On the other hand, they are perfect alternative to boxes when storing small fragile items such as figurines and picture frames, then again, only if used for storage purposes.

Envelopes that are protected with some kind of padding come in different sizes. You can use the postcard-sized envelopes for shipping valuable jewelries while the larger ones are best used for posting books, small gifts and other items that will fit them.

Often, padded envelopes feature a self-adhesive flap to easily seal your valuable item. Others come with a pull-tab, which makes it easy for the recipient to open the package. You just need to pull the tab at the end of the envelope and it rips off easily. You do not need to use a letter opener unlike with regular mailing envelope.

All the sides of the enveloped are cushioned with protective padding made of either recycled fibers or newsprint or plastic bubble wrap. The fibers used are like natural cotton, shredded and crammed together to provide the necessary cushioning. The same process is done with newsprint. As for the bubble wrap, they are often glued along the inside of the envelope.

Such design does not only protect envelopes from shock, it also prevents the content from bending. They can also protect the item from moisture, as the materials used inside and in the padding are all waterproof.

If the items require premium protection, heavy-duty paper is used in the outer cover of the envelope. Some also use plastic to make the whole package completely waterproof especially if the contents are made of paper. Specialty shops offer envelopes in metallic texture that also comes in different colors. These are perfect for sending gifts and promotional materials. Those who are environmentally aware may also opt for envelopes made of unbleached paper.

As for business use, the only dilemma with padded envelopes is that they are not versatile when it comes to envelope printing. The padding does not usually lay flat on the printer tray so there is no way for you to customize your company’s logo onto it. You may not have it customized in the printing press either. The solution: some packaging companies offer customized business envelopes. They can offer to print on the paper before putting in the padding. This process usually cost a lot more than customizing regular mailing envelopes.
